Cordyceps is a type of fungus used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Tibetan herbal practices as a general health tonic. Known for its unusual growth cycle in the wild, it has long been regarded as a valued part of traditional wellness routines. Today, cultivated forms of cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) are most commonly used in products available in Australia.

What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps is not a typical culinary mushroom. In traditional systems, it was prepared as part of a balanced diet or herbal regimen. Cultivated varieties are now used to provide a consistent and sustainable source of cordyceps for modern supplements and powders.

Cordyceps naturally contains a range of compounds, including:

  • Polysaccharides

  • Peptides

  • Sterols

  • Naturally occurring adenosine-like compounds

These are simply components found in the whole food matrix of the fungus.

Traditional Use

In traditional Chinese herbalism, cordyceps was considered a “tonic herb,” used in combination with other foods and botanicals to maintain general wellbeing. It was often included in seasonal broths, teas and powders as part of a broader wellness diet.
